These works were made in a period I became more and more interested in the overall globalisazion of media and the concequence it would have for the unique (image). Internet was the new thing and the worldwide adaption of this new way of sharing imagery meant we needed to reposition ourselves as artists. Questioning the definition of the unique but unabel to transalte it into digital output I started using xeroxed paper copies. A technique I asumed in those years, would become obsolete in the near future. Meanwhile CNN started demonstrating the power of " real time truth " through their revolutionary news updates during the First Gulf War. The French philosopher Beaudrillard was important to me because he questioned in his simularcum theory that what we believe to be true has become a copy of the truth because we see the world through media and not from first hand. I found this to be an essential element in creating my art. Was it necessary to see your object when creating art or was there no need any more because the world did not care anyway and was moreover unable to verify the uniqueness of an image. The copy of the copy was as genuine as the real thing. Playing with this major problem for artists and other creators (music was being sampled for instance) I made this work during an important period in my art and called it the " Soap & Suspence" series. Soaps to me were peculiar phenomena exemplary for that time and I was amazed by the fact that people were watching (living) on screen lives that were an imitation of their own. The background images I used were old fashioned photographes (there were no digital cameras yet) taken off the television screen during soap broadcastings. Subtitles which are used in Dutch television offered me a helpfull tool to put suspence in the stills of the soap. The subjects up front vary but are a combination of science and nature or more specific nature defined by science and becoming more and more digitalised in the proces. On occasion I would frame the work with "snow". These photos taken from the screen when there was no broadcasting and no signal would show an interesting pattern of "nothingness" As if the world seized to exist. It was the time of "WYSIWYG", but what if you can't see anything anymore? What would you get??
